About Count On
Count On is the continuation of the United Kingdom's year of Mathematics - Maths Year 2000. It is a Department for Education project with a remit to "bring maths to all" - and one of the major vehicles for this is the web site.
Gameplay
Memory Spin is a game for 2 players. The aim is to recognise and describe movement as turns
using fractions of turns, angles and up to 8 compass directions. It uses memory skills, but could be played without
covering objects.
Three rounds are played by each player. Play starts with a character (could choose from 'medieval tower', or 'robot' scenarios for example) being placed in a circle, surrounded by 4 objects.
Round 1
After looking at the screen (for about 10 seconds), the objects are hidden (this could be done by a spotlight effect, or covering each item with a cloth). The figure in the centre spins, then stops facing an object. A demand is made to turn to one of the objects (either as a character and speech balloon (with sound?), or in a flashing box). The player then has to choose the correct turn from a multiple choice list:
- Quarter turn
- Half turn
- Three-quarter turn
- Full turn
If correct player claims that prize. The second player has his/her go as above.
Round 2
4 new objects are revealed, once studied are covered and the spin is done again. The player then has to choose the correct turn from a multiple choice list:
Round 3
4 new objects are revealed, once studied are covered and the spin is done again. The player then has to choose the correct turn from a multiple choice list:
Scoring
The items for each player are added as they play, they could appear down the sides of the screen.
If at the end on three rounds there is a draw, there could be further rounds until one player gets it
wrong.
