Shine week 2008

Summary

Shineweek 2008 signed up over 2,500 UK schools (10% of all schools in the UK) representing over 1,000,000 students in just three months. The social network showcased talent in every child in the country via an online community of profiles, blogs, video, audio, image and written content!

Working closely with Creative Partnerships and the Department for Children, Schools & Families, Brightlemon developed a social networking website to celebrate the talent of young people across England and Wales.

The web site utilised the power of social networking to exceed targets and reach over 10% of schools in the country. Children from across the UK used the website to showcase their talents by uploading images, audio and video clips, and then rating and commenting on the content. With a secure registration facility manually double checked, we ensured that sensitive data was, and continues to be, protected at all times. The site became home to over 3,000 multimedia uploads from almost 2,500 schools representing about 1,000,000 students. Showcasing over 300 unique talents, the website was featured on BBC 1 Breakfast, BBC 5 live, PM.gov, Channel 4 and nationwide in other radio and print media. Built in only a few months, the web site quickly became a roaring success, and not only an integral part of the project, but the backbone of it.

Special thanks to: Carol, Caitlin, Glen, Wyl, Joe and the team at Creative Partnerships; Lucy and Lucy from the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Talent and Enterprise Taskforce; Lydia, Georgie and the amazing team at RED consultancy/RED PR; and to all the organisations - the Arts Council, the BBC, Channel 4, Radiowaves and many others - and to all the schools and pupils who made Shine 2008 such a phenomonal success!

Gary Carse (17) and Michael Bailey (18) from Prudhoe Community High School in Northumberland make up Batt and Ball animations, a student enterprise company set up in December 2006. Gary began making animated films after a friend invited him to come along to an after school film club on an evening where Stop Motion Animation was being demonstrated. He immediately expressed an interest and took the lead in the group working on simple drawn animations using a whiteboard and readily available software (Stop Motion Pro). He borrowed some equipment and 2 weeks later reappeared with 3 or 4 short plasticine animations he had made around his bedroom.
